Excitement Builds at Hillel at VCU as Fall Semester Approaches

As summer winds down, VCU Hillel is gearing up for an exciting and meaningful start to the new academic year. With a full lineup of events designed to welcome students, foster connection, and build community, we couldn’t be more excited to kick things off.
Last month, in partnership with Richmond’s Jewish Community Relations Committee (JCRC) and a member of VCU’s Board of Visitors, we hosted a small focus group of students and faculty to discuss campus climate and explore constructive ways to address antisemitism. Initiatives like this reflect our ongoing commitment to creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for Jewish students at VCU.
Welcome Back Shabbat Dinner
In just a couple weeks, we’ll begin the semester with a student leadership retreat to energize and equip our student board for the year ahead. Shortly after, we’ll host a festive “Welcome Back” Shabbat dinner at the end of the first week of classes, followed by a scenic hike and picnic on Belle Isle the next week—both great opportunities for new and returning students to meet, reconnect, and enjoy Richmond’s beautiful surroundings.
Throughout the semester, students can also look forward to weekly “Bagel Breaks,” where they can stop by for a quick bite and a casual check-in between classes. These moments of community and nourishment have become a cherished part of campus life at Hillel.
Meet and Greet
We’re also excited to invite parents, families, and alumni to be part of the celebration. On Friday, Aug. 15, we’ll host a “Meet and Greet” at the Hillel House from 4 to 5:30 p.m.—a drop-in event for new and returning students and their families.
Alumni Shabbat Dinner
Then, on Friday, Sept. 19, we’ll welcome back former students for our second annual Alumni Shabbat Dinner, a warm gathering full of memories, connection, and shared tradition.
As the only non-denominational, egalitarian Jewish organization on campus, Hillel at VCU is proud to create inclusive spaces where students of all backgrounds can explore Jewish life, leadership, and community. We can’t wait to welcome everyone back this fall!
As always, we’d love to hear from you!
Are you a VCU Hillel alum? A proud parent? Someone with a connection to Jewish life at VCU? We’d love to connect and learn more about your story — and how we can continue to support and serve Jewish students, their friends, and allies.
